Offering a decorative straight-back hardwood chair with a hand-carved panel-back, paw feet, and bats carved into the seat rails. Each of the knees of the front cabriole legs shows the face of a fierce bearded man with long, sweeping hair.
The rear of the back panel is plain. The panel carving features three elders in a peaceful courtyard shaded with persimmon trees, overlooking trees and homes with mountains in the distance. The wood appears to be mahogany with its original lacquered finish. The panel scene looks Japanese, as well as the positive symbols (bats, persimmons) included in the design. Construction uses mortise-and-tenon and nails.Tool marks are evidenced in the panels, rails and legs. Plain rear legs and stretchers. A combination of black and brown stains to emphasize relief designs. Photos taken in sunlight which really brightened the orange. Indoor lighting takes the orange out so it shows as warm brown. Height at back 35 inches. Height of seat 17-1/2 inches. Trapezoid seat 19" across front, 17" across back, sides 16-1/2 deep.
Original finish shows crackling to lacquer with some patches of loss (crest rail and back of the panel). Signs of aging are part of this chair's appeal. Decorative chair without all the heaviness often found in old Asian export furniture. Please see photos for details. Pick-up only from north-central Florida, Gainesville area near I-75 expressway.
