EXQUISITE ANTIQUE JAPANESE LACQUERED TIGER TRAY ON STAND. Meiji / Taisho Period (early 1900s). Celebrating the Year of the Tiger in 2022. Fabulous lacquered tiger tray and fitted stand representing the tasteful Asian aesthetic of the last century. Featuring a bold wild tiger amongst stylized bamboo, the removable tray sits upon a finely shaped base encrusted with colorful inlaid raden (mother of pearl).

The red and gold design draws attention from all the way across the room. Amazingly, even the underside of the tray is exquisitely hand decorated in golden maki-e, indicating the rare quality and attention to detail. Ornate and magnificent design with minute linework, some nearly as thin as a single hair. The fine quality would have been reserved for only the wealthiest families. The artisan who created this superb piece was a master craftsman who utilized many techniques including, maki-e (gold sprinkled) and takamakie (raised design).

The variety of colors and techniques are nothing short of spectacular. Too much to list, see photographs for all of the meticulous detail.

Dating to the early 1900s, this fine tray would have been traditionally used as a serving piece for guests and respected dignitaries. Today, it would be wonderful for serving tea, sweets and delicacies, or for a variety of treasures in the office, studio, or on a dresser top. Must have been carefully stored by its fortunate owners for over a century. An utterly amazing example of the artistry of a bygone era. Measures approximately 14 inches wide, by 14 inches deep, by 3.25 inches high.

A skillfully crafted work of art, and an outstanding centerpiece for the discriminating connoisseur of world class Japanese antiques. The process of creating such pieces from hand lacquered wood required the talents of one or more highly skilled artisans as well as a considerable investment in time. It was necessary to carefully dry the wood for an entire year before being shaped. Another year of drying may have then been needed before the lacquer finish could be applied. The lacquer work would then require time to complete as multiple coats were applied and each coat must dry completely in a carefully controlled atmosphere before proceeding.

An entire piece of fine Japanese lacquer ware such as this one may have taken several years to complete. See 12 photos above left. VIEW OUR OTHER ANTIQUE TREASURES & OFFERINGS HERE.
