This is an antique Japanese mid Meiji Era c. (lunch box) set which includes 7 individual boxes with two lids, two larger boxes with lid and a serving tray all neatly fitted into a red lacquer lidded box.All the boxes have black lacquer exteriors and red lacquer interiors. All boxes and lids also have the name of the company (see picture 8). On the back of the box there are two finger holes to push the contents of the two levels out (see picture 6). Each box and lid was. Hand crafted from kiln dried cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese black and red lacquer. They all have dovetail joinery. The exterior lidded chest measures 10" wide by 14" tall by 7 1/2 wide (25 x 36 x 19 cm).
All box show minor wear but are very structurally solid and in good condition.
