ANTIQUE 19thC JAPANESE MEIJI GOLD LACQUER MAKE-I BOX AND COVER, SIGNED ZOHIKO. Lacquered box and cover, by Zohiko (Nishimura Hikobei). With Hokusai style seascape scene depicted in fine gold make-i and cut gold foil decoration, dating to the 19th Century. The box, with delicately shaped cushion form corners, made of black and gold lacquered wood. The top of the lid is finely decorated in maki-e, inlaid gold kirikane (cut out gold foil), and takamaki-e raised gold design to the seabirds, waves and rockwork, the sides similarly decorated.

The underside and internal surface are of glittering nashiji (gold flakes sprinkled into the lacquer), with the Zohiko'Elephant' makers mark signed to the base. One of the most exclusive lacquer manufacturers in Japan, Zohiko Studio has been in continuous operation since 1661. He donated it to a temple, and it became famous throughout the city. From that time onwards, people referred to the studio as Zohiko, Zo for elephant and Hiko for Hikobe, and this also led to the development of their distinctive makers mark. Length: 14.4 cm or 5 5/8 inches.

Width: 11 cm or 4 3/8 inches. Height: 6.7 cm or 2 5/8 inches. In good antique condition, with signs of age appropriate wear and use, mainly seen to the corners and rim edges, including chips and loss to the lacquer. Please see the images provided which complement this description.
