An elegant Japanese late Meiji period hokkai, or picnic box. Crafted of black lacquer, and decorated in gilt copper mounts.
The body shaped as a series of stacked rings. Four legs run up the sides of the body, and are embellished with gilt copper mounts. Thick braided rope of pale green silk serve as the carrying handles.Shows some age wear but in very nice condition for it's age. One of the copper leg base mounts is missing one of the nails/pin that helps hold it on. It still stays in place well but is a little loose.
A chip on the top. Almost looks like the lid was dropped before. It is still a very remarkable piece and wonderful condition for it's time Feel free to message any questions. The item "Japanese Meiji Period Black Lacquer Hokkai Picnic Basket Hat Box W Silk Cord" is in sale since Saturday, January 11, 2020.
