Antique Japanese (1938) Layer Lidded Makie Lacquer Kasane Jubako Bento Box

This is an antique Japanese five level food box known as a Jubako made of Japanese sugi (cryptomeria) wood in the early Showa (1938). All five levels nest together with two lids which are fitted to rest nicely on the. It is well made with all wooden pin construction and has its original 20 coats of Japanese black lacquer finish. It comes with two original lids to cover the food when served. It also includes the original signed cryptomeria wood storage box with the family name.

All boxes are decorated in Makie paint with vines, leaves and flowers made of shell. Having been used lovingly and stored for over a century, it still remains in fair condition.

Note some minor nicks to the original lacquer finish (see enlarged picture) and well as edges where the wood has separated and the lacquer has cracked (see pictures 9, 10 and 11). With all five stacked it measures about 7 1/2" square by 13" tall (19 x 33 cm). The original signed storage box measures 10.5" x 16" (27 x 41). A great storage box or useful for party food or an elegant meal.
