This is a large, circular serving bowl. Made of cryptomeria wood with over 20 coats of Japanese black lacquer. It has raised work in the center of a boating including a samurai with a falcon, two geisha, a servant and the oarsman all in raised work including inlaid bone and mother of pearl.The up sloped sides have floral images of cherry blossoms (see picture 7). This quality of workmanship is typical of the late Meiji era c. Having been used sparingly, with the exception of minor signs of past use (see picture 10), this tray remains overall in very good. It measures 15 1/2" in diameter by 3 1/2" tall (40 x 9 cm).
